Perth Amboy Free Public Library Announces 3rd Annual Black History Month Celebration

Black History Month 2026

Perth Amboy, NJ — The Perth Amboy Free Public Library is proud to announce its 3rd Annual Black History Month Celebration, taking place on Saturday, February 28, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the library, located at 196 Jefferson Street, Perth Amboy, NJ. This free, family-friendly event invites residents and visitors to come together to honor Black history, excellence, resilience, and community legacy in Perth Amboy.

This year’s celebration holds special significance as it aligns with the 250th Anniversary of the United States, highlighting the often-overlooked role of Black communities in shaping the nation from its earliest days. The Library is honored to welcome Leslie S. Arthur, Ph.D. candidate in African American History at Rutgers University and a nationally respected educator and DEI expert, as the 250th Anniversary Keynote Speaker.

The program will be guided by Carole Dortch-Wright, Communications Strategist and distinguished civic leader, who will serve as the Program Host. Admired among professional public speakers for her clarity, poise, and ability to connect audiences to purpose, Dortch-Wright brings both excellence and integrity to this momentous celebration.

A highlight of the afternoon will be a presentation by Robert “Bob” McCoy, Community Legacy Advocate & Equity Leader, whose life’s work reflects service, justice, and community empowerment. A former police officer, community development director, and equity and inclusion program developer, McCoy will present on local Black excellence in Perth Amboy, honoring generations of Black families whose hard work and perseverance helped shape the city we know today.

In a deeply meaningful moment, the Library will also present the Renee Skelton Community Legacy Award in honor of the late Renee Olivia Skelton, a lifelong Perth Amboy resident, environmental journalist, historian, and civic leader whose passion for preservation and justice left a lasting impact on the city and the Perth Amboy Public Library.

The inaugural recipient of this award is Carolyn Maxwell, founder of The Amboy Guardian. Like Renee, Maxwell dedicated her life to telling the stories of Perth Amboy and amplifying community voices. Through more than a decade of journalism, she documented local government, community milestones, and everyday triumphs, ensuring that the city’s stories were preserved with integrity and care.

The celebration will also feature entertainment and activities for all ages, including:

  • Comedy by our beloved local star Ron Snipes
  • A live saxophone performance by the talented David Cross
  • Music throughout the event
  • History and art exhibits
  • Children’s activities and face painting
  • Prizes, giveaways, and table vendors

Library Director Joel Rosa shared, “Black History Month at the Perth Amboy library is about more than reflection, it’s about celebration, education, and honoring the people who have shaped our community past and present. This year’s program brings together history, culture, and community voices in a way that truly reflects the heart of Perth Amboy.”

The Perth Amboy Free Public Library remains committed to creating inclusive programs that celebrate diversity, preserve history, and strengthen community bonds.
